-  Latest industry accolade “particularly significant”; marks third consecutive award in a month for ADNEC

- Company sets up Task Force to drive forward environmental initiatives

Capping a remarkable month for the company, ADNEC has added another prize to its trophy cabinet by winning the ‘Green’ Award, at the Middle East Events Awards ceremony held at the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai last Wednesday.

The latest accolade for ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company) follows awards for “Best International Venue” won by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, and “Best UK Venue” won by ADNEC-owned ExCeL London, at the Exhibition News Awards, held at the Lancaster Hotel in London earlier this month.

“ADNEC has been at the forefront of the ongoing development of the events industry in Abu Dhabi and we are determined to ensure our leadership role extends to areas of sustainability and social responsibility,” said Humaid Al Dhaheri, ADNEC’s Director of Finance & Human Resources.

“Our latest award, which recognises ADNEC’s ‘green’ credentials, is particularly significant for us, illustrating ADNEC’s commitment to Abu Dhabi’s 2030 Vision which places sustainability at the very heart of the development agenda.”

ADNEC has recently set up a 15-member Environmental Task Force comprising representatives from several departments within the company. This team will drive forward the adoption of new initiatives aimed at consolidating ADNEC’s various environmental initiatives.

“We are delighted that ADNEC’s initiatives continue to draw industry acclaim not only regionally but also internationally; providing us the inspiration to reach further in raising industry standards and pioneering best practices,” added Al Dhaheri.

Last year, Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre recycled 91.9 tonnes of cardboard cartons, 609 kilos of plastic and 52 kilos of cans. The recycling initiative corresponded to the conservation of 1,564 trees and preventing the consumption of 34,960 gallons of oil, 644,000 gallons of water, 368,000 kilowatts of energy and 276 cubic yards of landfill space that may have otherwise been used. Further, the use of intelligent lighting in certain areas of the venue also reduced energy consumption.

The ADNEC-owned Aloft Abu Dhabi, which is interconnected with the exhibition centre, has 560 solar panels which provide more than 90 per cent of hot water for the hotel, saving around 870 megawatt hours of electricity annually. ADNEC’s Capital Gate tower that’s under development adjacent to the exhibition centre, uses a double-glazed façade on the upper floors, low emissivity glass and relies on a stainless shield running down the lower floors of the building, all of which are designed to reduce energy consumption in the building.

ADNEC has also engaged successfully with sub-developers in its Capital Centre micro-city adjacent to the exhibition venue, to explore ways of minimising the ecological impact involved in the construction of the 23 towers that comprise the (Capital Centre) development.
